Artichoke – a delicacy and an eye-catcher in one
The Artichoke is a thistle you eat – it's the still-closed flower buds that are harvested. It grows a good metre tall, has silvery, deeply cut leaves and makes a fine feature in an ornamental garden too. Leave one bud unpicked and it opens into a striking violet flower.
