The trapping mechanism
The Dionaea, also known as the Venus flytrap, is a fascinating plant with unique snap traps. These snap shut within fractions of a second when the sensory hairs on the inside of the trap are irritated. The hairs are even visible to the naked eye.
It is not absolutely necessary to feed the Venus flytrap, but it can be exciting to observe the closing process if you occasionally feed flies or other small insects. Every insect caught gives the plant a growth boost. It is advisable not to irritate the traps unnecessarily, as each trap can only snap shut a limited number of times.
In its natural range in North and South Carolina, Dionaea grows mainly in damp swamps alongside other carnivores such as Drosera and Sarracenia. In the past, almost all Venus flytraps were collected from the wild, which almost led to their extinction. Nowadays, fortunately, all plants come from horticultural propagation.

The right care
Caring for the Venus flytrap (Dionaea) is uncomplicated and makes it an ideal plant for beginners and carnivore enthusiasts. The plant needs plenty of direct sunlight to develop optimally. A sunny south-facing window or an outdoor spot on the balcony or in the garden are perfect for this.
To provide Dionaea with the best conditions, it should always be supplied with sufficient lime-free water. Rainwater is ideal, but distilled or osmosis water is also suitable. In winter, the Venus flytrap needs a dormant period at cool temperatures between 2 and 12 °C. Most of the leaves should die off during this time, which is completely normal. The substrate should only be kept slightly moist.
Dionaea can be kept outdoors all year round in a bog pot or bog bed.
