Courage in a herb
The ancient Greeks already loved thyme – its name derives from the word thymos for courage and vigour. Roman soldiers bathed in thyme water to draw strength, and in the Middle Ages noblewomen embroidered thyme sprigs onto their knights' sashes as good-luck charms. To this day whole hilly landscapes of the Mediterranean are fragrant with this aromatic herb.
Indispensable in the kitchen
Thyme seasons braised dishes, roasts, potatoes and Mediterranean sauces – dried it is even more intense than fresh. As part of the “herbes de Provence” it belongs to the basic equipment of every kitchen.
Care tip
Thyme is a typical child of the Mediterranean: it loves sun, prefers it rather dry and copes excellently with poor soil. Waterlogging is its only enemy. As a perennial plant it will accompany you for many garden years.
