Ornament and vegetable
The runner bean, also called scarlet runner, comes from the mountain regions of Central America. With its bright red flowers it was initially prized in Europe as an ornamental plant, before its large, tasty beans were discovered.
Tall-growing and robust
On a climbing support, the runner bean climbs several metres high and greens fences and pergolas in no time. The young pods taste good as a vegetable, the ripe seeds as a hearty dried bean.
