Orchids are very hardy and adaptable plants. The word soil is misleading here, because orchids are so-called aerial roots. Therefore, they do not need proper soil. They originally grow on trees and get their nutrients and water from the air. Since you can not offer the plant native conditions ( very high humidity ), their roots must be kept in special substrate to protect them from drying out. The substrate must be loose and airy. Waterlogging must be avoided, otherwise the roots would rot very quickly.
