When can fruiting vegetables go outdoors?

What location do fruiting vegetables need?

Full sun, warm and sheltered, on nutrient-rich soil. Tomatoes are best kept rain-protected to prevent late blight.

What planting distances apply?

Tomatoes approx. 50–60 cm, peppers approx. 40–50 cm. Cucumbers, courgettes and squash need plenty of space (approx. 80–120 cm).

Do tomatoes need to be pinched out?

Cordon tomatoes yes: remove the side shoots in the leaf axils regularly. Bush or wild tomatoes are not pinched out.

How do I water fruiting vegetables correctly?

Water evenly and at the base, ideally not over the leaves: in sunshine, wet leaves can scorch, and overnight moisture encourages mould and fungal growth. Don't water too late in the day, so the plants can dry off. Irregular watering also causes tomatoes to crack and leads to blossom-end rot.
