Frequently asked questions

Which exotic fruits can you grow from seed in our climate?

Good options include e.g. Cape gooseberry (Physalis), kiwano (horned melon), melons and watermelons, pepino (melon pear) and litchi tomato. In summer they thrive outdoors in warm spots, more reliably in a greenhouse; some are suitable as container plants.

Do exotic seeds need a pre-culture?

Yes, almost always. Most exotic fruits are heat-loving and are started indoors in the warmth from February to April. They only go outdoors after the Ice Saints – or they stay permanently in the greenhouse or container.

Why do exotic seeds often germinate slowly – and what helps?

Many have hard seed coats or a high heat requirement. Soaking the seeds overnight, a constant 25–28 °C (heat mat/indoor greenhouse) and patience significantly improve germination.

Can you overwinter exotic fruits?

Some are perennial and can be overwintered frost-free as container plants (e.g. Physalis, pepino). Annuals such as melons, on the other hand, are grown anew from seed each season.

How much warmth and sun do exotic fruits need?

Full sun, warm and sheltered from wind – a greenhouse or a sheltered south-facing wall is ideal. They need a long, warm season so that the fruits can ripen.
