Salad plants - lettuce is more than greens

There are countless varieties of lettuce and countless delicious salad preparations. A salad plate can be green, but it can also be as colorful as the rainbow. Eisberg lettuce, head lettuce, romaine lettuce, sugarloaf, lollo, Lollo Rossa, Field Lettuce red and green, rocket, oakleaf green or red, endives, radicchio or else spinach salad. In the supermarkets are usually the iceberg lettuce strongly represented, or only seasonally to find other varieties such as endive. In our online store you will find from spring to autumn all varieties and do not have to limit yourself there. Fresh lettuce leaves from your own garden, which are only picked a short time before preparation, are rich in vitamins. No lettuce from the supermarket can compete with that, which was harvested a long time before it was sold. More vitamins, more flavor, more quality.

Frequently asked questions

When can I plant lettuce young plants outdoors?

There is no blanket answer, as it depends on the variety. Use the calendar week in which we offer the respective plant in the shop as your guide – this window shows you when you can set it outdoors. Early and late batches can be additionally protected with fleece or in a greenhouse.

What location and soil does lettuce need?

Sunny to partly shaded, on loose, humus-rich and evenly moist soil. In high summer, a partly shaded spot helps prevent premature bolting.

What is the correct planting distance for lettuce?

It depends on the variety. Non-heading lettuces such as lamb's lettuce or rocket can be planted closely (about 10 cm), forming an almost continuous row. Heading lettuces such as butterhead or iceberg need more space (about 25 cm in every direction). Don't plant too deep – the heart must stay clear.

How often should I water lettuce?

It depends on the weather and the variety. The warmer it is, the more water the plants lose through their leaves and the more often you need to water. Varieties with small leaves and rocket, with its narrow, elongated leaves, are more heat-resistant and need less. Water evenly, in the morning and at the base – ideally not over the leaves: in sunshine, wet leaves can scorch, and overnight moisture encourages mould and fungal growth. Also avoid watering too late in the day, so the plants can dry off and don't stay wet overnight. Drought stress makes lettuce bitter and causes it to bolt.

When is lettuce ready to harvest?

This too depends on the weather and variety. In warm weather the plants grow very fast and are often ready to harvest after just 4–6 weeks; in spring and autumn it can take up to 10 weeks due to less sunlight. Thanks to the short growing time, butterhead lettuce can be grown from spring to autumn – early and late with fleece or in a greenhouse. With pick-and-cut lettuces you can harvest individual leaves continuously and they regrow; heading varieties such as iceberg, on the other hand, are harvested whole once the head has matured.
